‘It’s rather a low-tech recording,’ said David Sylvian of Blemish, ‘although there are certain elements to the record which were developed with software, particularly Christian’s track [‘A Fire in the Forest’] and ‘Late Night Shopping’.’ The burbling electronic undertone and accelerating oscillations of the latter distinguish it from the Derek Bailey guitar improvisations that form the basis of the tracks either side in the album’s running order.

‘a lullaby for neurotics’

UK music magazine The Wire runs a regular feature whereby a series of tracks is played to a guest who is challenged to identify both artist and music, with the ensuing conversation a launch-pad for discussion of artistic trends, innovation and influences. In June 2003, it was the turn of David Sylvian to encounter the ‘Invisible Jukebox’. Included in the music presented to Sylvian was a track with which he was familiar. ‘Is it Christian [Fennesz]?’ he asked. ‘It’s the title track from Endless Summer,’ came the confirmation of his inquisitor.

The terrorist attack that took place on 9/11 in 2001 shook the world to its core. I’m certain we all remember where we were when we heard the news and saw the pictures from New York on TV. For Ryuichi Sakamoto the events were literally “close to home”. Just days after that devastating event he wrote a column in the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun entitled ‘My Viewpoint’, which began:

The God of Silence

The Uncommon Deities audio-visual installation heralded the start of David Sylvian’s creative input to the 2011 Punkt Festival in Kristiansand, Norway, where he was artist in residence. Invited by Punkt founders Erik Honoré and Jan Bang, Sylvian’s initial intention had been to re-stage an audio installation that he had provided for the Bienal De Canarias on Gran Canaria two years earlier (see ‘When We Return You Won’t Recognise Us’) . However, he saw the opportunity to bring together various creative threads to concoct a truly immersive experience for the first night of the festival.
